We're using novel 3D manufacturing to unlock natural materials, transforming surgical implants and medicine with safer, high-performance solutions

The Tough Tech problem we are solving

Today’s surgical implants and tools still rely heavily on plastics and metals that were never designed to work in harmony with living tissue, often leading to poor integration, chronic complications, and limited ability for the body to heal itself. At Materialize Bio, we are addressing the Tough Tech challenge of turning nature’s most promising biopolymers—such as silk, collagen, chitosan, and alginate—from underutilized lab materials into practical, scalable solutions for real-world surgery, enabling regenerative, antimicrobial, and tissue-friendly implants that existing manufacturing methods have struggled to deliver efficiently.

About our solution

Materialize Bio is a Tufts spinout developing a highly scalable 3D manufacturing platform tailored specifically for natural biopolymers, unlocking complex, monolithic shapes and device architectures that can advance medicine and surgery beyond the limits of conventional implants. By harnessing the intrinsic regenerative and material properties of these nature-derived biomaterials, our platform is designed to accelerate fast, cost-effective prototyping and production of next-generation surgical implants and tools that are better aligned with how the body heals, with the goal of making advanced surgical care more effective and accessible for patients worldwide.
