The Tough Tech problem we are solving
Renewable energy technology has come a long way in the past few decades, finally making solar and wind power generation competitive with fossil fuels on price. But they don’t work when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. To ensure grid reliability and affordability regardless of weather events, grid outages, or other periods of prolonged stress — while meeting rising energy demand — we need new technologies capable of storing energy for multiple days. Even though the cost of lithium ion batteries has fallen dramatically in the past decade, they are still far too expensive to cover longer durations and make renewables the dominant energy source for our grid.
About our solution
Form Energy has developed an iron-air battery capable of cost-effectively storing energy for 100 hours at a time, directly helping to solve these grid challenges. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which can only provide energy for a few hours at a time due to their relatively high costs, iron-air batteries can deliver energy for multiple days at a time. Made from some of the safest, cheapest, and most abundant materials on the planet — low-cost iron, water, and air — Form's battery system provides a sustainable and safe solution to meeting the growing demand for grid security and resiliency.
