What is The Engine?
Spun out of MIT in 2016, The Engine’s mission is to enable technical founders to translate breakthroughs in science and engineering out of academia and into companies that create big, positive global change. The Engine provides founders working at the intersection of science and engineering – Tough Tech – with access to the infrastructure, capital, resources, and community they need to scale their companies.
Located between Cambridge’s Kendall and Central Squares in the heart of MIT’s campus, The Engine operates over 200,000 square feet of wet lab, fabrication, and office space. Our flagship building, located at 750 Main, is currently home to 80+ Tough Tech resident companies. The Engine provides residents with a supportive community, including an ecosystem of other founders and subject matter experts and access to events and programs designed to support early-stage companies. In addition to resources available to resident companies, The Engine also runs several non-resident programs to help Tough Tech founders across the country bridge the gap between discovery and commercialization.
Who are The Engine’s Resident Companies?
At any given time, 80 to 100 companies call The Engine home. Companies must go through a screening and application process to be admitted into The Engine. While a founder’s affiliation with MIT is not a requirement, many founders have backgrounds from MIT (e.g., Departments of Chemistry, Materials Science, and Mechanical Engineering), Harvard, Yale, and other world-class institutions. Most resident companies join The Engine at the pre-seed/seed/Series A stage and are working on breakthrough technologies across some of the most challenging disciplines, to include biotech, advanced systems, and energy. We’re proud that many resident companies, such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Form Energy, and Via Separations, often “outgrow” The Engine, gaining customer traction, raising growth rounds, and moving outside our walls.
